The objects of this inspection are edible oil drums made of plastic, requiring accurate detection and identification of the character information on the drum's exterior. Because the drum surface is made of high-gloss plastic, it is prone to specular reflection and bright areas in the production line environment, resulting in reduced character contrast and blurred edges, posing a significant challenge to visual inspection.
Detection difficulties
The production date, batch code, and product specifications on edible oil packaging are core information for product quality traceability and market compliance. However, the smooth surface of plastic oil drums easily produces strong reflections under inspection lighting conditions, posing a significant challenge to visual inspection. The main difficulties are concentrated in the following aspects:
Severe Reflection on the Plastic Surface: Ordinary direct light sources easily produce bright reflective areas, obscuring character details;
Insufficient Character Contrast: Reflection combined with ambient light interference affects the distinction between characters and background;
High Stability Requirements: Continuous and stable character inspection results must be achieved while maintaining production cycle time.
Traditional inspection solutions, with their ordinary light source combinations and parameter settings, cannot effectively distinguish reflective areas from character features, resulting in blurred character edges and insufficient contrast. This makes accurate identification by inspection equipment difficult, easily leading to missed or false detections and slowing down production line inspection efficiency. Manual inspection, on the other hand, suffers from high subjectivity and low efficiency, making it difficult to meet the cycle time requirements of large-scale production. This pain point has long plagued the quality inspection process in the food packaging industry.

Test solutions

Precise Hardware Matching: Utilizing a high-resolution industrial camera ensures clear imaging of character details; paired with a professional lens offering large depth of field and low distortion, suitable for inspecting the curved surface of oil drums, ensuring clear capture of characters in different positions; simultaneously adjusting the light source angle and illumination method to prevent specular reflections from directly entering the lens.

Refined Parameter Calibration: The technical team repeatedly adjusted the camera's exposure time, gain value, and key parameters such as light source brightness and color temperature, specifically targeting the reflective characteristics of plastic oil drums, to achieve a stable contrast between the characters and the background. Through multiple parameter combination tests, the optimal parameter scheme was ultimately selected, ensuring that character features remain clearly visible even in complex reflective environments.
The final test results show that, through reasonable selection of light source and design of imaging scheme, accurate character grasping and stable detection can be achieved even on highly reflective plastic surfaces.
